Update on the MS diagnostic criteria

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an immune mediated disorder which causes inflammation in brain with or without spinal cord involvement. Throughout the years, the diagnostic criteria have developed with most recent update being published soon making it easier to diagnose MS in the early stages of the disease. Clinical and paraclinical parameters are used in the process.

Most important change in the latest update is adding optic nerve as one of the anatomical areas of interest (others being cortical/juxtacortical, periventricular, infratentorial, and spinal cord). Role of biomarkers such as optic nerve imaging, lesions appearance on MRI, and CSF examination is emphasised. Definition of radiologically isolated syndrome (RIS) is further clarified. Assessing older patients with suspected MS requires stricter criteria.

While any neurologist is able to assess patients and arrange the necessary tests, seeing an MS specialist as early as possible ensures rapid and accurate diagnosis, as well as access to appropriate treatments in the right setting.

If you think you have MS or a related disorder, book an appointment with Dr Al-Araji for a formal assessment.
